'From
Grandma's Needlebox' The counting pattern is a reproduction of the original sampler by S.I.M.1860, true to nature as much as possible. She embroidered in cross-stitches on hand-woven linen when she was approximately 10 years old. It was probably her first sampler because there are four alphabets. In the first alphabet the I is a J. In the second alphabet the G is a crowned G This sampler is made in cross-stitches over 4 threads. The use of exclusively black silk is typical of the samplers of Groningen (see below - 'Black Embroidered Samplers from Groningen, Holland'). Please note that although the booklet is in Dutch, an English translation is now available as an accompaniment - not a separate book. The instructions for the counting pattern are in English! The booklet and counting pattern pack is available in the U.K. at £8.00 plus p&p. Please contact Linda to order. To overseas purchasers, the booklet and counting pattern pack is priced at £11.50 plus p & p.

'Little Gems from the
Land of Jaarfke' (In Dutch)
Samplers and other traditional needlework from the Groningen-German border area by Hennie Stevan-Bathoorn. Groningen is the town and also the name of the region situated in the north of the Netherlands, the eastern province of which shares a border with Germany. Around 1450 there lived a fisherman called Jaarfke who was something of a prophet in his time and predicted many disasters. Some of these predictions came true such as flooding, wars and famine and this region came to be known as 'the Land of Jaarfke'.
This book describes the needlework of this region during the period 1750-1950: the coloured and black-embroidered samplers; the sampler rolls from convent schools; needlework education in primary schools and the everyday clothing and underwear of working people. At the end of the book are five charted patterns of coloured and black-embroidered samplers.
N.B. Please note that this book is in Dutch.
