'Maidens of the Sea'

Inspired by a lovely verse in the first stanza of Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem The Mermaid written in 1893, this project depicts mermaids, the maidens of the sea, with an embroidered sewing case and matching scissors weight.

'Strawberries So Faire'

This design features  a pair of sewing rolls in two different colour schemes. Each sewing roll has a pocket for storing your needlework treasures, wool needlepages, and a strawberry that fits into one end of the roll.

A Fair Maiden's Etui

The pyramid shape of this etui, or case, was popular during Victorian times. The outside panels are embroidered with traditional motifs. On the bottom of the etui is a verse that I adapted from an old song published in 1886. The verse begins with the line:
Come haste, my fair maiden, prepare for your worke .....
This verse was the inspiration for the name of the etui.

On the inside are a pinkeep, thread rings, and two silk pockets.  On the model, one pocket holds an embroidered needlebook and the other a mother of pearl ruler from Kelmscott Designs.  Also on the inside of the etui is an embroidered scissors pocket. Our model uses reproduction swan scissors from Uncommon Scissors. The finished size of the etui is almost 4-1/2 inches tall. 

The model was stitched on 36-count Cream linen from Zweigart, Inc. using overdyed cotton threads from Crescent Colours and The Gentle Art  (Sampler Threads) plus DMC embroidery threads and cotton perle #12.  DMC substitutions are provided for the overdyed threads.

Stitches used:  backstitch, cross stitch, cross stitch over one linen thread, nun’s stitch, and smyrna cross stitch.
Stitching directions, charts, stitch diagrams, and detailed assembly instructions are included.
